Extra Extra
One of the great things about having a hubby involved in film making is that you can be called at the drop of a hat to pick up something, or assist with this or that, or to be an extra. A few weeks ago they needed a bunch of extras for a scene they were filming, so Darran asked if I could come and be an extra. "Fun" I thought, so I headed up to Coal Creek where they were filming to make my debut as an extra. I arrived at 730 in the morning, just like all the other 60 + extras were asked to do. And then we sat around and waited while everyone was fitted. As we waited to get into make up and be fitted, I wondered where Darran was as I hadn't seen him yet. I had asked a few of the crew but they didn't know where he was either. Then I heard this rumbling and looked out and saw this...
As soon as I saw this old car, I knew right where Darran was...taking the opportunity for a little joy ride.
Just what I thought. Making his grand entrance in style! What a cool car, huh? It was in mint condition and you could tell it was loved by the owners. Once I found Darran, and said hello it was my turn to get fitted. As soon as the wardrobe ladies took one look at me, they panicked. Needless to say, they didn't have anything long enough (surprise surprise) that would fit me. The longest dress they had came to just under my knees. So, my day as an extra was over before it started. But I decided to stick around as Pam and Russ had come down to be extras too.
Here is a shot of the extras waiting to get fitted, and make up. You can see that there are a few of them in the make up chairs. Kate and her assistant did a fabulous job getting everyone made up and in such a timely manner too!
At one point I had to run to the bathroom and just happened to have my camera with me. When I saw these two buildings together and read their signs I just had to take a picture, that is after I quit laughing. Please can someone tell me, what is the difference between toilets and bottom station? :) hehehe
Here is my darling mum in law Pam. Doesn't she look fantastic? Oh she had so much fun, and everyone on set just loved her! What's not to love? She is darling and has the funnest personality. After this day they left for Perth, and several of the extras that worked with them this day came up and asked me why they weren't there on some of the other days that the extras were working.
And here is my father in law Russ. It is one of my favorite pictures I took of the day. He seemed to fit right into the era that they were filming! He looked so cute in his hat and his costume! And how can you not just love his smile???
With only three wardrobe girls, they did an amazing job trying to cater for all the different sizes and shapes of the extras...note to self, next time bring your own vintage dress to be an extra! :)
A little nip and tuck went on through out the morning as the costumes had to be altered to fit the extras. Boy the costume girls worked hard! And the following pictures are just a snip it of their work!
I had to take this picture, the frowny face lady looked like this the whole day, never once cracked a smile. Totally made me laugh. She either didn't like getting up early and then just sitting around and waiting, or she got into character early and knew that people back in those days didn't ever smile at the camera.
These two became fast friends, and Glenys in the blue became a regular extra, we had several nice visits on several different days on several different sets. She is a lovely lady.
Pam and Russ with Glenys and friend. Don't they look great?
Once everyone was dressed and made up they were loaded up and transported up to the court house for the court scene.
Bye everyone, have fun!
Once at the court house and everyone settled, Kate moved in one last time to put some finishing touches on the main characters. This was the judge. Like his wig? They still wear those here when you go to court.
All the extras settled and waiting for them to start filming. Don't Russ and Pam look great?
Then the sitting and waiting begins as they start to set the scene, crop the area and make sure all the lights, sound, smoke is ready for the shoot. Being an extra is a lot of hard work as you get there early and then you spend the rest of the day just sitting around and waiting. Bless all you extras for your time and dedication! At this point, being too tall to fit into any costume looked like it had it's advantages! :) All in all they had a great day of filming, the extras had a great time saying that they were in a film and several actually came back for days and days of filming because they had so much fun. Oh the life of an extra!
