I know I know

It's been a while since I've added anything to this old blog. Not that I haven't wanted to, not that I haven't thought about it, not that I haven't tried to sit and write. I actually have several posts in my head lined up to add for your reading enjoyment (aren't you excited???)....it's just honestly that I haven't had time.

Life is good here in Archies Creek. The weather is changing from the hot sunny summer to the dark wet winter, it is getting cooler here. Most of the "locals" those being the Australians are "rugged up in their jumpers" meaning wearing sweaters. And a lot of them have pulled out the winter parkas, scarves and hats. I don't feel it is that cold, not Utah winter cold, so I am just fine hanging out in a jumper or long sleeve shirt. It's strange. Having lived here 2 1/2 years (can you believe it???) it is still hard for me to get my head around the fact that instead of pulling out shorts and summer clothes in May I am wearing long sleeves and sweaters. Strange....

The reason I haven't had time to get on and blog lately is that our lives have been totally CRAZY busy! At work we have hired four new assessment officers, who I am in charge of and trying to get them settled, trained and oriented has been an major task. The last of the four start on Monday, so hopefully in a couple weeks time my work life will have settled down just a bit. On top of the full time work we still have our little business, which is keeping the nights and weekends really busy trying to keep up and fill the orders that so many nice and wonderful people have ordered from us. Throw in Darran's work, and the odd video jobs, news jobs and working on a new movie...it's a wonder we have been able to do what we have.

The greatest thing about all this is that no matter how busy and crazy life can get it is still full of wonderful surprises, even if you have to stop and take a minute to notice them. For instance, I woke up at 5:30 the other morning, don't know why, but I couldn't get back to sleep. So I laid there for a bit, and then decided that I had the whole morning ahead of me before I went to work so I got up and was able to send a few emails, make a few phone calls (that is one good thing about living on the other side of the world, you can make phone calls at 6:00am). And then I got to watch an incredible sunrise...bright and vivid pinks, oranges and purples. That was a wonderful surprise! I was so glad that I woke up at 5:30! Sorry I didn't get pictures of it...that morning all I wanted to do was to sit and soak in it's beauty. So I guess the moral of my little post today is...stop and take time to smell the roses, watch a sunrise or sunset and be amazed at the wonderful surprises that are happening around you each and every day, even if it seems you are crazy busy. Trust me, you aren't too busy to enjoy the surprises around you...

A great day for footy!

A couple weeks ago (okay so maybe close to a month) we went up to Melbourne to the MCG for some good old Aussie Rules Footy. I love nothing more than watching a sporting event live...the sights, smells, sounds, and drunks make the game come alive...not to mention the footy players in their shorts and and their muscles! And the first game of the season between the Hawks and the Cats didn't disappoint! It was a rematch of the grand final (Superbowl) where our beloved Hawks (my husband will be thrilled that I said "our") won the title last September. This game however, didn't see the Hawks win, but it was a good game and a fun way to start the season!Footy is usually a fast paced game, lots of running, kicking, hitting (notice the guy laying on the ground - caused by a big hit) it is a very contact sport, and to think they play it wearing cups and mouth guards as their only forms of protection.
As you can see, the Aussies love their footy. This is just a taste of what the stadium looks like - three levels, packed seats and lots of noise! What a great atmosphere!!!
Oh I guess I better mention, there are no markings on the field, like hash marks in American Football. They have a square painted in down by the goal posts, and a circle in the middle of the field where they bounce off the footy to start the game or every quarter. But other than that, it's just the outside line to give the players a visual of the oval...yes people the field is oval.
Mmmmmmmm....Buddy Franklin....yummy! Sorry - he is not ugly I tell you, and better than his looks are his skills on the footy field. He is my favorite footy player, he is only in his early 20's and he has several more years of greatness ahead of him...
See even here they have a pep squad! This is the Hawthorn cheer squad, they were at the other end of the field (the north end zone so to speak).
And I couldn't go to a game without snapping a picture of the local fan. Do you just love that he is holding more than 10 empty beer cups? Awww the life of a footy spectator! Now I should note that not all Aussie footy fans are beer drinkers, but boy those that are sure make watching a game of footy interesting...just ask Darran about the guy who sat next to him who tried to pick a fight with him during the game because he was a fan of the other team. Good times! At one point I thought that I was going to have to go down to the police station to bail him out, but thankfully Darran was able to hold his cool and keep his head and we were able to watch the rest of the game in peace.
Someone once asked me if they tackle in Aussie footy like they do in American football, the answer is yes...even in just shorts and a jumper. If you ever come to Australia, make sure it's during footy season, as we would happily take you to a footy game (if that is your thing). I'm sure if you came during cricket season Darran would be happy to take you to the cricket...but don't count on me for that...cricket is not my thing...then again, I haven't been to a game in person...
